Why do my sound not work after installing Ubuntu Linux?Ubuntu uses dmix by default for ALSA, dmix is a mixer which makes it possible to play sound from several sources at once. Unfortunately dmix do not work with Linux/PPC and thus makes it impossible to play sounds. A simple solution is to create a configuration file in the users home directory that tells ALSA do disable dmix.
Open your favourite text editor and create the file ~/.asoundrc and write the following in it:
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm hw
}
This tells ALSA to not use dmix but rather use the hardware directly for your user. Back to top
